Flexible pathway to the academic world

The Players Union and the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä work in cooperation. At the Open University, you can begin studies in most subjects at any time of the semester, and the teaching is organised so that studying alongside work is flexible. You can enroll easily online. Self-studying is also possible online. Classroom teaching is organised in Jyväskylä, Helsinki and partner educational institutions of the Open University around Finland. The Open University offers lifelong learning opportunities for everyone interested in university studies regardless of age, educational background or place of residence. Each year, approximately 14,000 students study at the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä. Students of the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä account for approximately one-fourth of all study credits completed in Finnish open universities.

With some exceptions, you can enroll for studies at the Open University at any time. The actual studies can be begun whenever it best suits you. Any classroom teaching included in the studies is primarily arranged in the evening and weekends. However, studies in several subjects can be carried out partially, or even fully, remotely according to your own schedules.

In addition to the subject matter of the studies at hand, the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä will enhance your information and communications technology skills and skills in the use of electronic services. At the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä, you can study in many ways. In many subjects, studies are possible completely remotely. The most popular form of studying at the Open University is writing written learning assignments on a given subject. The assignments can be done completely regardless of time and place, such as in a hotel room on your own laptop. Online courses have also increased in popularity enormously in recent years, as studying on a home computer when it best suits the student suits adult students well. Conventional examinations can also still be taken. Examinations are organised on general examination days in both Jyväskylä and Helsinki. For some students, these places can be too far away. However, there is a solution to that, too. The Open University of the University of Jyväskylä has established a very well working cooperation network with educational institutions operating across Finland. Students can also take examinations at the cooperating educational institutions. The northernmost partner institution is in Rovaniemi, and there are also dozens of other options.

Pathway to becoming a university degree student...

The Open University pathway refers to applying to become a university degree student based on studies at the Open University. In this case, the applicant is accepted as a degree student without an entrance test, except for a possible interview or other assessment of suitability. A student accepted as a degree student by pathway application is primarily given the right to complete both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. If a student who has completed studies at the Open University has general eligibility for university studies, he or she can naturally also apply for university studies through the general application process.

Many students who dream of university studies also prepare for university entrance tests using the opportunities provided by the Open University. Open University studies can also provide additional points for the actual application. The Open University also helps in learning more about the actual subject and provides additional resources for the world of academic studies.

The content of the studies and information gained from them are also important. They also enhances self-confidence and mental basic resources for the entrance test. All previously completed studies can also be included in the university degree, which makes it faster to graduate.

University studies without an entrance test...

At the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä, you can take university studies without entrance test. The course portfolio includes studies from the faculties of the University of Jyväskylä and the School of Business and Economics as well as language and communication studies from the university’s language centre. Usually, students start their studies from basic studies and then advance to intermediate studies. Some of the students aim to complete a university degree through Open University studies.

In some subjects, it is possible to complete all studies required for a Bachelor’s degree at the Open University without the exception of the maturity test. However, it is the faculty that officially grants the completed Bachelor’s degree. A Bachelor’s degree equals 180 ECTS credits. In the arts, possible major subjects include history, literature, Finnish language, writing or organisational communication and public relations. In economics, the major subjects available include management and leadership, marketing and entrepreneurship.

Detailed planning of studies is an essential part of efficient and goal-oriented studies. At the Open University, the independence of studying, diversity of studying methods and abundance of possible study options make the careful planning of studies particularly important. The student’s prior knowledge, skills, objectives, motivation and attitude are among the factors that influence the planning of studies. The studying environment, such as situation in life, learning situation and nature and content of studies should also be taken into account in the planning.

Open University students also have the chance to receive student counselling at almost any phase of their studies. The methods and content of the counselling are flexible, and student-orientation is an underlying theme. The counselling aims to consider the individual student’s needs and objectives as well as any factors connected to the student’s studying and life situation and any accessibility of studying.

Counselling is provided at the Open University through multiple channels: by e-mail, telephone, in personal meetings and online. The different forms of counselling aim to ensure that every student can get the information and counselling they need regardless of time and place. Depending on the need for guidance and phase of studies, counseling is provided by study and register secretaries, university lecturers, planners and student counsellors.
