The extent of the vocational degree in sports for professional athletes is 180 ECTS credits. The professional title of a graduate is sports instructor. Depending on the educational background, the studies take 2–3 years. The degree provides general eligibility to apply for university studies.
There are separate multi-method study groups for summer and winter sports athletes, with the schedule planned by taking the annual rhythm of the sports into account. The studies are intended for athletes with at least primary education who are under goal-oriented coaching. The summer sports study programme is particularly suited for professional adult athletes in, for example, football, pesäpallo, track and field, golf, martial arts or other similar sports. The winter sports study programme is particularly suited for professional adult athletes in, for example, futsal, ice hockey, ski sports, basketball and volleyball.
The education provides basic information about coaching, health education, the most common sports and how to instruct in them. The students gains diverse preparedness for various tasks in giving sports and leisure activities instruction and acting as an independent professional.
The degree programme for summer sports athletes will begin in September 2017. The flexible multi-method studies are comprised of classroom periods at Vierumäki, remote studies, learning assignments and on-the-job learning periods—for example, in your own club.
